# Creating a Discord Server

> A quick start guide to setting up your own Discord community.

Creating a Discord server is free and easy. Here is how to set up a basic structure.

### **1. Create the Server**

1. Open Discord.
2. Scroll to the bottom of your server list on the left.
3. Click the **+ (Plus)** icon ("Add a Server").
4. Select **Create My Own** > **For me and my friends**.
5. Give it a name and an icon. Click **Create**.

### **2. Create Categories and Channels**

Organize your server to keep it clean.

* **Right-click** on the channel list > **Create Category**.
  * Examples: *Information*, *General*, *Voice*, *Staff*.
* Click the **+** next to a category to add channels.
  * **Text Channels**: `#general`, `#announcements`, `#rules`.
  * **Voice Channels**: `Lounge`, `Gaming`, `Music`.

### **3. Basic Roles**

Roles give colors and permissions to users.

1. Click the **Server Name** (top left) > **Server Settings** > **Roles**.
2. Click **Create Role**.
   * **Owner**: Give it a red color and `Administrator` permission.
   * **Member**: Give it a blue color.
3. **Assign Roles**: Right-click a user > **Roles** > Select the role.

### **4. Invite Friends**

1. Right-click any channel > **Invite People**.
2. Copy the link and send it to your friends!
3. (Tip: Click "Edit invite link" to make it never expire).
